Haemultang

해물탕
Hae-mul-tang

Spicy mixed-seafood hot pot

About the dish

Haemultang heaps the season's seafood — blue crab, shrimp, clams, squid — into one pot for a broth at once refreshing and fiery. It is a feast dish for a crowd, everyone gathered round to share the sea's bounty.

Key ingredient

Mixed seafood (haemul) — shrimp, squid and clams together bring abundant taurine and amino acids; low-fat, high-protein and clean-tasting, with minerals that restore vitality. Available year-round from Korea's coastal waters.

Ingredients

Sea bream 300g (1/2 fish), crab 150g (1), clams 50g (5), shrimp 150g (10), soybean sprouts 150g, minari 100g (1/2 bunch), water as needed, minced garlic 2 Tbsp, gochujang 2 Tbsp, red-pepper powder 1 Tbsp, salt 1 Tbsp, scallion 35g (1 stalk)

Simple recipe

  1. Clean and prepare the sea bream, crab, clams and shrimp.
  2. Trim and wash the soybean sprouts and minari, cutting the minari into 6 cm lengths.
  3. Wash the scallion and slice it diagonally (0.3 cm).
  4. Line a pot with the soybean sprouts and arrange the seafood on top.
  5. Add the minari, minced garlic and sliced scallion, season with gochujang, red-pepper powder and salt, then pour in water or broth and bring to a boil.
