Dongji Saealsim

새알심 (동지)
Sae-al-sim

Glutinous rice balls in patjuk (eat your age)

About the dish

Saealsim are little balls of glutinous rice dough dropped into red bean porridge, with the custom of eating one for every year of your age. Floating in the winter solstice patjuk, they carry a wish for an untroubled year ahead.

Key ingredient

Glutinous rice (chapssal) — warming by nature, it protects the stomach and aids digestion; its sticky amylopectin gives lasting fullness, warming the body and restoring energy as a base for rice cakes and porridge. Autumn harvest, grown nationwide.

Ingredients

Main: glutinous rice flour, patjuk (red bean porridge) · Seasoning: salt

Simple recipe

  1. Knead the glutinous rice flour with boiling water.
  2. Roll the dough into small round balls.
  3. Boil the red bean liquid.
  4. Drop in the balls and cook until they float.
  5. Season with salt and sugar and serve.
