A Plate & A GlassDaeboreum (First Full Moon)

Ogokbap

오곡밥
O-gok-bap

Five-grain rice eaten at the first full moon for a year of fortune

About the dish

Ogokbap, five-grain rice, is the signature dish of Daeboreum (the first full moon), eaten with assorted dried 'aged' vegetables to pray for a good harvest and ward off summer heat for the year ahead.

Key ingredient

Mixed grains (japgok) — sorghum, millet, beans and red beans together give fiber and minerals; they ease blood-sugar spikes and support gut health. Autumn crop, nationwide.

Ingredients

Main: glutinous rice, non-glutinous rice, glutinous sorghum, glutinous millet, black beans, red beans · Seasoning: salt

Simple recipe

  1. Rinse and soak the glutinous rice, sorghum, millet, red beans and black beans.
  2. Parboil the red beans once first.
  3. Mix the grains evenly and place in the pot.
  4. Add a little salt and cook.
  5. Steam through fully and serve as the full-moon dish.
